Jets Trending: Huh?

The New York Jets are a very curious case. They imploded last season to finish 8-8, which isn’t a bad record, but for a team with such lofty expectations and talent, it was a disaster. The question is, was that implosion a one time thing, or a continuing trend. If the Jets play up to their talent level, they would be an automatic wildcard team. They have a top 10 defense, with the leagues best tandem of cover corners, and a strong running game.

They also have a QB who has proven he has the magic hand late in games, and excels on play action and boot legs. Sounds like that fits perfectly into their system right? If the Jets had gone by their system, the season could have turned out better. The problem was they did not. In 2009, the first year of the Jets back to back AFC Championship games, the Jets run to pass ration was 58.1/41.9. In 2011 when they imploded and finished 8-8, the Jets ratio was 41.8/58.2.

There are other factors, and to say this is the only reason is absurd; however, playcalling must be called into question. Former OC Brian Schottenheimer and current HC Rex Ryan didn’t see eye to eye. Rex now went out and found a personality to match his in Tony Sparano. The Jets are looking to flip the script and go back to a very run dominate team. That bodes well for them.

The question is, have they brought in talent in the places they need it to get them over the hump if the new playcalling alone doesn’t. (and it won’t)

The Jets brought in hard hitting strong safety LaRon Landry who has injury concerns, and backup QB Tim Tebow. These are the only 2 names which most casual fans will even know. Landry doesn’t fit the hole at safety, the Jets need a good covering free safety to match up on tight ends. Tim Tebow will head the wildcat package, and could push Sanchez to be a better QB, but will these 2 alone give the Jets the push to make the playoffs? The answer is no.

The Jets are such a circus at the moment that no one can tell if they are trending up or down. Will the implosion bring them closer? Will Tony Sparano turn the offense into a smash mouth running unit? Will Rex Ryan find the pulse of the locker room and bring his troops back together like only his charisma can? No one knows. The Jets look like an oscilloscope on the trend meter. They are a steady swing of up and down. There is no way to really gain a clear picture until the draft. Then we will see if the Jets have brought in personnel to push them over the edge.

Dolphins Trending: Down

It is very difficult to trend down from a 6-10 season, but that is the direction Miami is heading. After a very disappointing 0-7 start, Miami rallied late with a 6-3 run to end the season. The question is, can they continue that trend to start the 2012 season?

I feel the answer is no, and let me explain why. Miami has been possibly the biggest train wreck of the offseason so far. That is a feat to do, when considering they share a division with the Jets. Miami courted and failed to land both Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn. They will be relying on the arm of Matt Moore all season. Moore isn’t a bad quarterback, but he isn’t of the caliber to carry a team.

Miami sent its leading receiver in Brandon Marshall to Chicago, and released leading tackler Yeremiah Bell from their safety position. Bell is 34 but still productive as a strong safety. The thought of wearing thin at safety in a division with the TE tandem of Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski is frightening.

How will Miami cover New England’s tight ends? How will Matt Moore complete passes against the vaunted New York secondary without the playmaker in Brandon Marshall? How will Matt Moore handle the new look Buffalo defensive line? The sad answer is, they most likely won’t. This is a season where Miami lives in the cellar of the division.

Miami has a strong defense, and will rely on that to compete this season and beyond. If Miami can rebuild properly, it could be back competing in a season or two, but for this season, look for Miami to trend down.

Bills Trending: Up

The Bills, out of all teams in the division, are trending up the most. Last season the Bills finished 6-10 overall and only 1-5 in the division. Bills fans finally have something to be excited about. The Bills boast one of the best defensive lines in football.

The Bills are poised to have their first winning season since 2004. One of the key downfalls of the Bills last season was the injury to the ribs of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. With football there is always a chance that he could fall to injury again, but a new year with a fresh start means a healthy QB. The same QB that lead the Bills to a 5-2 start. Now imagine the same situation with a vastly improved defensive line reeking havoc on opposing QB’s.

Don’t jump the gun just yet, Bills fans. If you read my previous article on the Patriots I said they were trending down, but would still likely win the division. The Bills are trending up, and heading towards what looks like a winning season, but there is a catch. This is the Bills first season switching back to a 4-3 defense. While the line is talented, it will take time to acclimate. Expecting the Bills to make the playoffs this season is a push. The Bills will build from last season and come out better, and will compete with the Jets and Patriots for the top 2 spots in the division. This will be a very interesting season for the Bills, and they are on the way up.

Patriots Trending: Down

This is you pre-draft trending report. I will be doing one of these for each team.

I’m sure this will not be well received by Patriots fans, but hear me out. The Patriots went to the Super Bowl last season, but fell short to the Giants. In my book, for the Patriots to trend up, it would mean that they are in position to win the Super Bowl next season. I don’t think anyone will deny that the Patriots will be a contender. New England has added a number of talented players in free agency, and has enough draft picks to make a real difference.

New England hasn’t done anything to make themselves trend down, as always they are one of the best run teams in the league. The reason I show them trending down in Tom Brady. Brady is one of the best QB’s in the league, and arguably in the history of the league. So why is he the reason the team is trending down? His age. Yes, Tom Brady is healthy and is still performing better than almost every other QB in the game. The question is for how long. If the injury bug stays away, it could be another 3 or 4 years. The real roll of the dice is, how long will he remain healthy. If Brady were to go down with an injury, how would the Patriots fair without him? 11-5 with Matt Cassel, you might say.

Lets look at the division that year. Miami went 11-5 and took the division with the emergence of the wildcat and Chad Pennington at the helm. The Jets fell flat due to an injury to Brett Favre’s throwing arm. Buffalo was in the basement. Compare how an untested QB would fair against this division now. The Jets have the best corners in the league. Buffalo has the best D-line in the league. Miami is still a smash mouth defender with talent in the secondary.

New England is a program, unlike Indianapolis who fell completely apart without Manning. New England could still win games without Brady, but could they win the Super Bowl without him? The answer is no.

With the new look Buffalo defense, and Rex Ryan licking his chops at pass rushers in the draft this season, it looks as if Brady could be on the move and on the ground even more than ever this season. If Brady stays healthy, the Patriots will be back in the playoffs. The big question is can he? That is why I have the Patriots tending down. Keep your chin’s up, New England, even trending down, you’re still looked at as a favorite to win the division and go to the playoffs.

The roadtrip starts with the strong Bengals team, followed up by a very short week with the Dolphins playing the Colts on Thursday. The Colts are attempting to change their dynamic after losing Peyton Manning. They are attempting to become a more physical team. If they succeed, this could be a hard battle for the unrested Dolphins. The Phins will get time to rest up on their week 10 BYE before traveling acorss the country to face the 49ers. The Dolphins will get to end their season in Sun Life Stadium against the division rival Bills.

Week 17 Sunday 12/30/2012 Patriots @ Jets CBS 1:00 PM

The Patriots start the season off right with a huge home game against the 49ers. They follow it up by hosting the rival Jets in week 2. There is no way the Patriots can’t be excited for the start of their season. Week 5 will be difficult, as the Patriots travel across the country to face the Seahawks. Nation wide travels takes the spark out of teams more often than not, even if you are the powerhouse Patriots.  The Patriots get time to heal up during their Week 9 BYE before facing the physical Ravens. The Patriots end the season in the wrong way, a 2 game road streak against division rival Bills and Jets.

Week 17 Sunday 12/30/2012 Bills @ Dolphins CBS 1:00 PM

The Bills start the season out right, forcing a west coast team to travel to the east. The Bills also get the advantage of forcing the visiting team to play at 1PM EST. Imagine a jet lagged offensive line attempting to stop Buffalo’s new look defense. The Bills will also get the advantage of getting a BYE week in week 5 giving them ample time to take on their division rival Patriots in Foxboro. The Bills get a pay back of week 1 in Week 10 when they face the 49ers in San Francisco on a Thursday. This will be a short week after hosting the division rival Dolphins in week 9. The Bills finish out hosting their division rivals the Jets and the Patriots at home, before traveling south to end the season at Miami.

Week 16 Sunday 12/23/2012 Texans @ Jets CBS 1:00 PM
Week 17 Sunday 12/30/2012 Patriots @ Jets CBS 1:00 PM

The Jets start out with 3 straight division games before meeting the Rams in week 4. The Jets host the Phins and Bills early, but head to Foxboro in Week 2. The Jets will also have a tough trip Week 8 when they visit Seattle. The Jets have been notoriously bad when playing away on the west coast under coach Ryan. This will be softened slightly by the 4:15PM EST start time, but it will be an uphill battle. The Jets end the season against 2 very good teams, but will get homefield advantage. Ending against the Texans and Patriots is a very tough way to finish a season, but if the team is in a playoff push Fireman Ed will have the fans at Jetlife stadium in an uproar.
